George Washington’s Birthday A Legal Holiday. George Washington was born in Virginia on February 11, 1731 by the Julian calendar,
however, Great Britain and all its colonies adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752, which put George Washington’s birthday at February 22, 1732. There are only 11 permanent Federal holidays and George Washington’s birthday is one of them. President’s Day enacted as a federal employee holiday on January 31, 1879. However, in 1968 Congress passed the Monday Holiday Law to “give uniform annual observances of certain legal public holidays on Mondays.” By creating more 3-day weekends, Congress hoped to “bring real benefits to both the spiritual and economic life of the Nation.” Now the third Monday in February will be the 3-day weekend insuring Americans would NEVER celebrate George Washington’s birthday on his birthday because the 3rdMonday of February can’t fall any later than February 21!
George Washington was the General in the Revolutionary War that lead the Patriot’s against the British during forming of the United States of America. Americans wanted to crown George Washington as King, however, Washington turn it down because it was against what they had all fought for over the British. He was the first President of the United States of America. Washington took the oath of the office of the President on April 30, 1789. We all see a picture of George Washington almost every day. He is on the One Dollar bill. His portrait is also on the Purple Heart given to soldiers wounded on the battlefield. Washington enjoy less than 3 years of retirement after leaving the White House. He retired to Mount Vernon where he died of a throat infection on December 14, 1799. Washington was a tobacco farmer.
