Abraham Lincoln 16th President

Abraham Lincoln was born February 12, 1809.

Abraham Lincoln Our 16th President

Abraham Lincoln was our 16th President. Today we as a Nation celebrate Abraham Lincoln Birthday on what  is known as President’s Day. It’s the third Monday of February and celebrates both George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Both of these men set the course for American’s way of life.

Lincoln’s Birthday is a legal holiday celebrated in some states on the 12 February. Abraham Lincoln’s birthday is still a state holiday in California, Connecticut, Missouri, New York, and Illinois, falling on 12 February, regardless of the day of the week.

Abraham Lincoln is credited with many accomplishments not shared with any other President. The two most important accomplishments were freeing from bondage black people and ending our Nation’s only Civil War.

An Assassin’s bullet

Unfortunately, Abraham Lincoln never got the chance to enjoy his “Golden Years” like most US Presidents. Abraham Lincoln Our 16th President’s life was ended short by an assassin bullet.

John Wilkes Booth assassinated President Abraham Lincoln, on Good Friday, April 14, 1865. The assassination to place while President Lincoln was attending a play entitled “Our American Cousin”.  The play was being performed at the Ford Theater in Washington D.C.  President Abraham Lincoln is also known as the first President assassination in American history.

One year after his death Congress gathered for a memorial address which was the first formal observance of his birthday. Unlike George Washington birthday, which was a federal holiday, as of today Abraham Lincoln’s birthday was only a legal holiday in a few states. They are: California, Connecticut, Missouri and New York, and Illinois.

How have we honored President Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky. Lincoln’s birthplace is on the National Historical Registrar. He was a legislator from Illinois and lived in Springfield, IL, which is Illinois’s state capital.

For Abraham Lincoln’s bicentennial birthday in 2009, the United States Mint released four new pennies. The new commemorative coins had a new design on the reverse (back) side of the coin, which showed the various stages of Lincoln’s life.

On the obverse (front) side of the penny Lincoln’s head remained as in the past. The new penny reverse side designs were; a log cabin, Lincoln sitting on a log reading a book, Lincoln as a state legislator in front of the Illinois Capitol, and the partly built dome of the U.S. Capitol.

Lincoln wearing stove-pipe hat

As a child I celebrated Abraham Lincoln and George Washington birthdays on different days. Celebration today, however,  it’s President’s Day on the 3rd Monday of February. I most remember Lincoln’s stove pipe hat he use to wear all the time. Oddly enough there has never been an annual Federal Holiday honoring Abraham Lincoln.
